J.D. Salinger on Monday sued the writer and publisher of a book billed as a sequel to his classic novel “The Catcher in the Rye,” saying the work infringes on his copyright. Salinger is asking a judge to block publication of “60 Years Later: Coming Through the Rye” written by an author identified as J.D. California.

Even the name is designed to cause confusion…

The authorized dealers imported the watches into the U.S. and then sold them to Costco. This stream of commerce enabled Costco to sell the watches to customers below retail price. In 2003, Omega began to engrave its watches with a small emblem — not more than half centimeter across — which Omega registered with the copyright office. Repeat the same stream of commerce again in 2004: Omega sells watches to dealers in Egypt and Paraguay; dealers import the watches into the U.S; dealers sell the watches to Costco; and Costco sells the watches to customers below the retail price. Except, this time around, Omega filed suit alleging that Costco’s acquisition and sale of the watches constituted copyright infringement under 17 U.S.C. §§ 106(3) and 602(a).

During the Pirate Bay trial, the prosecution showed how various torrents linking to infringing material could be downloaded from the Pirate Bay, including an album by the Sweden-based hiphop group Advance Patrol. The music industry lawyers then claimed that the Pirate Bay was aiding in copyright infringement and that the artists and labels were losing millions of dollars. Interestingly, the bands and artists, including Advance Patrol, were never informed that they were to feature in the trial. Even worse, Advance Patrol feels that they were abused by the labels, as they are using BitTorrent themselves, and encourage their fans to do the same.

Technically, this is more of a trademark fail, but still very amusing.

The Conference Board of Canada bills itself as “the foremost, independent, not-for-profit applied research organization in Canada. Objective and non-partisan. We do not lobby for specific interests.”  These claims should take a major hit based on last week’s release of a deceptive, plagiarized report on the digital economy that copied text from the International Intellectual Property Alliance (the primary movie, music, and software lobby in the U.S.), at times without full attribution.

So, in an example of how twisted our legal system can be, Cosmic Debris (owners of the Emily the Strange property) has sued Marjorie Sharmat and Marc Simont. Who are they? The writer and illustrator of the Nate the Great series of children’s books (news via Robot6). One particular book from 1978, Nate the Great Goes Undercover, features a character named Rosamond who had long black hair and was kinda creepy.

No big deal, there are plenty of “goth girls” in literature, right? (And in fact, that’s Cosmic Debris’ argument.) However, as discussed here, one of Emily’s very first appearances features her in the same pose as Rosamond, with very similar looking (mirror image) cats surrounding her, and accompanied by the very same text, “She looked like she always looks. Strange.”
